Our multicultural society holds many views of what happens at death. There is nothing after death, let’s eat, drink and be merry. Or we are reincarnated. Or many have no idea. They have not thought through what will happen to them once they enter eternity through death’s door. Then there is the Christian view of the resurrection to eternal life. Jesus tells the story of two men who died. One was a rich man, and many would have thought that given his riches that he was extremely blessed by God. Instead we find that he ended up in hell. The other man was a beggar, who had nothing, was starving, and in poor physical health. Here the thinking would be what has this man done to deserve this? Yet we discover he is in heaven.
The rich man’s main concern apart from his immediate tormented situation was that he did not want his family members to follow him there. He knew his brothers were like him. They had a love affair with money. They did not take God at His Word. They had not thought too much about what would happen to them when they died.
The story told by Jesus should remind us that we need to consider the future. What happens when we die and depart this life? If you have not given any thought to it then now is the time to consider your death. God does not desire that any should perish, but we will perish if we have not responded to Christ and put our trust in Him and what He has done for us.
